Growing Healthy Kids
The Growing Healthy Kids project creates partnerships with local child care programs to address community health concerns by training providers to model healthy lifestyles and giving children access to hands-on learning opportunities.
According to a survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, only 26% of Kansans consumed the recommended three servings per day of vegetables in 2009. While declining health and rising obesity rates can be attributed to a number of interwoven factors, access to healthy options and awareness are commonly cited. Children specifically are at risk for health issues if they are in a household where the parents are not leading by example.
TFC set out to transform the child care centers into environments that model and teach healthy living. Knowing that, 64% of American children spend the majority of their day in child care and having a unique and longstanding relationship with the Kansas City metro child care sector put TFC in the perfect position to address this issue.
