- Keep it real. Talk about how media can influence teens to do things and spend money in ways that aren’t good for them.
Think it through. Discuss purchases and how to separate what is necessary from what is simply a status item.
Discuss star power. Discourage teens from glorifying celebrities for their possessions or lifestyles.
Spotlight your teen. Name the qualities that make your child a “star.”
Don’t over-indulge. Don’t buy whatever your child wants. Helping your teen work toward purchases teaches discipline.
Show gratitude. Help your teen recognize the “blessings” in their life.
Value people above things. Do things as a family—eat together regularly, plan outings and get involved in the community.
