Keeping Your Teen Safe Online | Print |  E-mail
  • It’s a tool. When used right, the Internet can be a valuable learning tool.

  • Lay ground rules. Be clear about rules for the Internet. Encourage other interests, too.

  • Get smart. Check site histories, use parental controls and set age filters.

  • Keep it in the open. Set up the computer in an open area where it’s easy to check in.

  • Discuss protection. Teach your child not to share personal information, such as passwords, your home address or phone numbers.

  • Teach caution. Discuss the risks of online relationships. Step in if your child is secretive about what he or she is doing online.

  • Pull the plug. If your teen won’t follow your Internet rules, take away access until they cooperate.
