Parenting Tips on Oct. 19 Fox 4 Morning News: Helping Children Deal with Loss
Parents can't always shield children from sadness and loss -- whether it is a friend moving away, loss of a pet, prolonged absence of a parent or the devasting death of a relative or friend. Tune in Tuesday, as our parenting expert gives tips on helping children learn to cope, and build emotional resources they can rely on throughout life.
How Children Deal with Loss
- Depends on age and level of emotional development
- Their grief might not look like ours
- Loss can affect their feelings of security
- May regress back to less mature behaviors, have outbursts
- Inability to express how they feel, work past it
How we Can Help Children Cope
- Take cues from child, give them a chance to talk
- Be honest/direct and encourage questions
- Let them know it is ok to be sad
- Talk about your own feelings
- Give an outlet to express grief: make a card, etc.
