Parenting Tips on Nov. 3 Fox 4 Morning News: Helping Children Cope with Stress


Children experience stress in their lives, just like adults – however they don't always have the skills needed to cope.  Tune in to Fox 4 to hear our parenting expert give us some ideas on what stress looks like in chidlren, and ways you can help your children de-stress.
 
Stress Symptoms

  • Physical – headaches, stomach aches, wetting
  • Emotional – fear, irritability, sadness
  • Behavioral – crying, nervous tic, losing temper
  • Social – withdrawing, teasing, bullying, extreme shyness 

Coping Strategies

  • Acknowledge their feelings
  • Help children to talk about what is going on
  • Encourage vigorous physical exercise
  • Spend special one-on-one time
  • Teach relaxation skills
  • Explain that mistakes are OK
  • Tell/read stories about dealing with stress
