Helping a child get to sleep can be like a nightmare for many parents.  Tune in to the Fox 4 parenting expert for tips on how to make a smoother bedtime routine for you and your child.

Why children may resist bedtime
  • Fear the dark
  • Fear of being alone and/or abandoned
  • Have nightmares
  • Don't want to miss anything/stop playing
  • Are too excited or restless
  • Have a physical need or discomfort
Tips for a smoother bedtime experience
  • Set a bedtime
  • Devote 20 to 30 minutes for your child's bedtime routine
  • Allow an hour of quiet play before sleep
  • Allow your child to choose the stories, songs or board games to play
  • Let your child pick a favorite stuffed toy for cuddling
  • Say good night, give a hug/kiss and say it is time to go to sleep
Getting your child to stay in bed
  • Leave a favorite quiet toy or stuffed animal near the bed
  • Every time your child gets up, calmly escort him back to bed
  • Firmly restate that it is time to go to sleep and that he must stay in his bed
We invite you to share your child's favorite bedtime story on our Facebook page.
