- Watch temperature and windchill
- Dress for weather
- Limit time -- watch for signs of distress
- Plan and promote activities
Outdoor Winter Activity Ideas
- Build a snow creature
- Build an igloo
- Go sledding -- keep safety in mind
- Build snow pies -- bring pans, other materials
- Go on an outdoor scavenger hunt -- pine cone, sticks, leaves, nuts
- Take a family walk -- look at holiday lights, snow, nature
- Take pictures of trees/plants in all seasons, compare with other seasons
- Shovel snow - shovel snow in a maze design
- Look for animal tracks. Decide what animal made each print.
- Get balls together for winter sports
- Have a Winter Olympics
- Fill a bird feeder or make homemade bird feeders
- Bring toy cars and trucks outside
- Make your own tracks in the snow with different objects
- Adopt a tree
- Practice putting on winter coats, gloves, mittens, hats, boots, etc
- Make graph to show many times you see each animal they see this winter.
- Talk about the Polar Bear at the zoo
- Prepare a space for a spring garden
- Experiment with freezing water in different shaped containers
