Parenting Tips on Dec. 7 Fox 4 Morning News: Teaching the "Calm Down" Avoids Melt-Downs


Sometimes children get so upset, such as crying themselves to sleep, that they can't seem to find a way to get past their hurt and calm down.  Tune in to Fox 4 to learn how to help your child do a better job controlling his or her emotions.

  • It's easier to think clearly
  • Less likely to say or do something they regret
  • It strengthens relationships
  • Builds a sense of confidence and competence

How to Help Children Calm Down

  • Acknowledge that your child is upset
  • Teach self calming skills when they are calm
  • Try to address underlying problem: hunger, tiredness, frustration
  • Provide emotional labels as children experience them
  • Model calm reactions to trying situations
